Insomnia is a common symptom that many of us have experienced, especially during stressful times. Insomnia can mean you have a hard time falling asleep, or it could also mean you wake up throughout the night and have a difficult time going back to sleep. Here are 3 quick tips to help with insomnia.
This is an acupressure point called Shen Men, HT7, and is very useful for calming the mind. You can simply press and rub on this area 20-30 minutes before bed to quiet the mind. Or even better, try using Lavendar oil on this point for extra calming aromatherapy benefits.
- Two more beneficial points are KD1 and KD3, both located on the foot. Try applying pressure on these areas for 1 minute each before sleep. An enhanced tip is to soak your feet in hot water for 20 minutes before going to sleep. Both these points will be affected by the warm water, which you can infuse with lavender salts or epsom salts.
The 3rd tip is ingesting gentle, calming herbs before bedtime. When my patients suffer from insomnia, I will usually add Suan Zao Ren or Longan fruit into their custom-blended herbal formulas for them to take at the end of the day. Herbs are a great way to calm the sympathetic system, relax from stress and feel more balanced, without any side effects of drugs. If you or anyone you know may want to try Chinese herbs, have them contact us to create a herbal formula tailored to address their insomnia or other particular health concerns.
Although acupressure and herbs can be effective as a home remedy, acupuncture is the preferred method to help with insomnia. Not only are you targeting the insomnia, but you are able to deregulate the sympathetic system, balance your hormones, increase circulation, decrease inflammation and boost your immune system.
