Although there is no known cure for AIDS, strong drugs are being used to help HIV infected patients live longer. These drugs often result in a lot of side effects (such as digestive issues) that make patients resistant to taking their medication.

Therapies such as acupuncture and moxibustion have been shown to offer relief for side effects from AIDS medication.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used since the early 1970’s to treat HIV/AIDS conditions and side effects such as digestive issues (bloating, cramping, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), headaches, fatigue, sore muscles, and swollen lymph glands.
Patients who were struggling to take their medications due to the strong side effects participated in a study where they received acupuncture and moxibustion treatments aimed to help calm and regulate their digestion. After six weeks of regular treatments, the patients experiment significant improvement.
The majority of the patients experienced significant decrease in their digestive symptoms (decreased bloating, gas, nausea) and claimed to be more willing to regularly take their medication now that they would not experience the side effects as drastically.

By integrating both Western Medicine and Chinese Medicine for those who are HIV-infected, patients have experienced fewer side effects and are experiencing higher quality of living.
