At Healing With Zen in Pasadena, California, we recently worked with a 38-year-old artist who suffered from debilitating right arm, shoulder, elbow, and wrist pain due to repetitive overuse from her profession. This case highlights how our holistic approach, including acupuncture, lifestyle modifications, and natural pain management strategies, helped her achieve long-term relief.

CHRONIC ARM PAIN FROM OVERUSE

The patient came to our clinic on May 27, 2025, reporting severe arm pain from weeks and months of intense drawing and repetitive arm movements. Her pain level was a 7 out of 10, and even at rest, she experienced constant aching. The discomfort disrupted her sleep and left her feeling anxious and stressed. She had difficulty moving her arm, and the pain affected her ability to work effectively as an artist. Her pain also affected her neck and shoulders as well. For another patient success story, see how we treated left arm pain using the Balance Method.

A PERSONALIZED ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT PLAN

We developed a customized treatment plan focused on reducing inflammation, relaxing tense muscles, and improving circulation in the affected areas. The patient was scheduled for acupuncture treatments twice a week for two weeks to manage her symptoms and accelerate healing. After the initial sessions, we transitioned her to once-weekly maintenance treatments based on her progress.

After her very first acupuncture treatment, she reported a noticeable improvement in her pain levels and greater relaxation in her neck and shoulders. However, due to continued arm use for work, some of the pain returned. By the end of her second week, her pain level had decreased to 5 out of 10, and the tenderness in her arm had significantly reduced. We’ve also helped patients dealing with related issues like neck pain and numbness down the arm.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ERGONOMICS AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES

During our sessions, we discussed the importance of ergonomic alternatives in her workspace and the necessity of taking frequent breaks. We introduced scheduled hourly stretching breaks, and she set alarms to remind herself to step away from her work and move her arm gently. This shift in her daily routine made a major difference in her healing process.

We also had an open conversation about the limitations of acupuncture as a standalone treatment—emphasizing that while acupuncture provides significant relief, continued overuse without changes to her routine would limit full recovery. The patient understood this clearly and began implementing the recommended strategies.

HOLISTIC PAIN MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

To complement her treatments, we provided her with herbal pain patches and taught her where and how to apply them when discomfort returned. These natural remedies helped extend the pain relief between treatments and empowered her to manage flare-ups independently.

By her fourth treatment, she was able to work for 3–4 days without experiencing any pain. By the sixth and final session in her initial treatment plan, she went a full five days pain-free. While she still experienced mild achiness in the shoulder, the elbow and wrist pain had nearly vanished. Learn a quick acupressure point for neck and shoulder pain by watching this video below!

LONG-TERM RELIEF AND MAINTENANCE

The patient continues to come in once a week for maintenance and has learned to listen to her body’s signals. She now takes regular breaks, stretches frequently, and applies herbal remedies as needed. Most importantly, she has returned to her artistic work with significantly less discomfort and much greater confidence.
