Asthma Self-Care Tips: Natural Ways to Support Lung Health
Living with asthma can make everyday activities feel unpredictable. While medications prescribed by your healthcare provider are often an essential part of asthma management, many people also look for natural ways to support their lung health and reduce stress between flare-ups.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) takes a whole-body approach to respiratory health. Rather than focusing only on the lungs, TCM also considers digestion, stress, sleep, immunity, and circulation, all of which may influence overall well-being.
Below are several self-care techniques that may help support healthy breathing and relaxation between asthma episodes.
Acupressure for Asthma
Acupressure is a technique that involves applying gentle pressure to specific acupuncture points using your fingers. Unlike acupuncture, no needles are used, making it an easy technique to practice at home.
Apply firm but comfortable pressure for 30–60 seconds while breathing slowly.
Lung 7 (LU7)
Located approximately two inches above the wrist crease on the thumb side of the forearm.
This point is traditionally used to support:
- Healthy lung function
- Coughs
- Throat discomfort
- Neck tension
- Headaches
Conception Vessel 12 (CV12)
Located midway between the breastbone and the belly button.
In Chinese medicine, digestion and lung health are closely connected. CV12 is traditionally used to support digestive function, which may indirectly benefit overall respiratory health.
Stomach 36 (ST36)
One of the most frequently used acupuncture points for overall wellness.
ST36 is traditionally used to support:
- Healthy digestion
- Energy levels
- Immune function
- Overall vitality
Meridian Stretch to Encourage Deep Breathing
Gentle stretching may help open the chest and encourage fuller breathing.
Try this simple exercise:
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Place your hands behind your back and interlock your fingers.
- As you exhale, slowly bend forward while lifting your arms comfortably behind you.
- Take several slow, deep breaths.
- Return to standing slowly.
Avoid this stretch if you have shoulder injuries or pain.
Aromatherapy for Asthma Support
Some essential oils have traditionally been used to encourage relaxation and promote easier breathing. While essential oils are not a treatment for asthma, many people enjoy incorporating them into their wellness routine.
These oils may be used in a diffuser, diluted in a carrier oil for topical use, or added to a warm bath when appropriate.
Always use essential oils safely and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
