QI Gong Movement- monkey serving banana

Life often asks us to give our time, energy, and attention to others. Whether we’re caring for our families, supporting friends, or managing busy work schedules, it’s easy to become focused on giving while forgetting the importance of receiving care ourselves.

One of the beautiful lessons found in Qi Gong is that true wellness comes from balance. Just as we breathe in and breathe out, we must learn to both give and receive with an open heart.

In this video, Healing with Zen founder and licensed acupuncturist Zen demonstrates a simple Qi Gong movement that symbolizes this powerful life lesson. The graceful forward and backward motions represent the flow of offering love and support to others while also allowing yourself to receive the same kindness in return.

This mindful practice serves as a gentle reminder that caring for yourself is just as important as caring for those around you.

What Is Qi Gong?

Qi Gong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is an ancient practice that combines gentle movement, breathing techniques, meditation, and focused intention to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

For thousands of years, Qi Gong has been an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The practice is designed to encourage the smooth flow of Qi, or vital energy, throughout the body.

Unlike strenuous exercise, Qi Gong emphasizes slow, intentional movements that almost anyone can practice regardless of age or fitness level.

Many people incorporate Qi Gong into their daily routine to promote relaxation, improve flexibility, and cultivate a greater sense of balance.

The Meaning Behind Giving and Receiving

The movement demonstrated by Zen carries a meaningful message beyond its physical benefits.

As your hands gently move forward, the motion represents extending compassion, love, and support to others. It reminds us of the importance of generosity, service, and being present for the people we care about.

As your hands return toward your body, the movement symbolizes something many people struggle with—allowing yourself to receive.

Receiving support can be difficult. Many of us feel more comfortable helping others than accepting help ourselves. This Qi Gong exercise encourages us to open ourselves to love, kindness, encouragement, and care from those around us.

Finding balance between giving and receiving helps create healthier relationships and supports emotional well-being.

The Benefits of Practicing Qi Gong

Practicing Qi Gong regularly may offer a variety of wellness benefits, including:

  • Supporting relaxation
  • Reducing everyday stress
  • Encouraging mindful breathing
  • Improving body awareness
  • Promoting gentle movement
  • Supporting emotional balance
  • Helping you begin your day with intention

Because Qi Gong is low-impact and adaptable, it can easily become part of your morning or evening wellness routine.

Even spending five to ten minutes each day practicing mindful movement can help you feel more centered and prepared for whatever the day brings.

Make Qi Gong Part of Your Daily Routine

Creating a daily wellness routine doesn’t have to be complicated.

Starting your morning with a few minutes of Qi Gong can help you slow down, reconnect with your breath, and approach the day with greater calm and clarity.

Whether your goal is reducing stress, improving mindfulness, or simply creating space to care for yourself, Qi Gong offers a gentle practice that supports both your body and your mind.
