Struggling with the discomfort of allergy symptoms this spring? A recent study showed that patients receiving acupuncture experienced fewer symptoms and were able to cut back on their use of antihistamines.
Those with allergies know that with the beautiful blossoms of spring come allergy season, and all the runny-nosed, watery-eyed discomfort that can bring. Despite the inconvenience of dealing with allergy symptoms, many sufferers leave their symptoms untreated because of the drowsiness and side effects associated with antihistamines, the standard Western answer to allergies. However, a recent study suggests there’s a better way to approach these pesky sniffles: acupuncture.
A 2013 study in the American College of Physicians’s Annals of Internal Medicine tested acupuncture treatment alongside a fake, placebo acupuncture treatment, as well as no acupuncture treatment at all. Patients were also given access to a standard antihistamine. The study showed that acupuncture “led to statistically significant improvements in disease-specific quality of life and antihistamine use measures.” In other words, the use of real acupuncture was shown to make patients feel better and use fewer drugs. For patients who struggle chronically with allergy symptoms and allergy drug side effects, this evidence could be life-changing.
