Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is an uncomfortable feeling in the legs and feet that includes arching, pulling, itching, and crawling sensations. These symptoms are typically worse at night and tend to lessen upon movement. Symptoms can be so severe that RLS sometimes leads to insomnia. Researchers have found that acupuncture combined with herbal medicine is an effective treatment for RLS, showing an improvement rate of 95.24%.

Although the etiology of RLS is considered unknown in biomedicine, there are several factors that have been associated with restless leg syndrome. RLS is known to be one of the many adverse effects of chronic stress.  A body that becomes chronically stressed can exhibit a decreased level of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) and an escalated level of Glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter). This shift in neurotransmitter levels can often lead to uncontrolled excitatory actions, such as restlessness, excitation, and nervous energy with a decreased ability to inhibit these actions, thus leading to restless leg syndrome. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles, RLS is related to Zang-Fu organ imbalances, namely the liver, heart, and kidneys. Accordingly, acupuncture treatments will work on reducing stress levels, balancing yin & yang, promoting qi and blood circulation, nourish the spleen, dredging the sanjiao meridian, and regulating the du and ren channels.
