Over the past few months, I have noticed an influx of patients who have come in with tinnitus, either as their main complaint or as a lingering symptom in addition to their primary health concern. Today, I want to discuss some of my findings and case studies with you.
Interestingly enough, many of these cases seem to have worsened after getting Covid-19 or the Covid-19 vaccine. While there is no clinical evidence that directly correlates Covid-19 to tinnitus, I am happy to report that acupuncture and herbs have helped many of my patients manage their tinnitus symptoms.
In my practice, I have found that alleviating tight neck and shoulder muscles can help reduce tinnitus levels, especially in female patients who experience fluctuating sounds in their ears. In some cases, addressing sinus issues or headaches has also been effective in reducing tinnitus symptoms.
One of my patients correlated his tinnitus to his jaw tightness, which we addressed with facial acupuncture and gua sha. With consistent weekly and now bi-weekly acupuncture sessions, his tinnitus intensity has lessened to almost unnoticeable most of the time, and his jaw has also loosed up.
Another patient’s tinnitus was deeply correlated with stress, anxiety, and lifestyle. By managing his tinnitus levels and helping him decipher that the sound was an indication of when he needs more rest and relaxation, we were able to facilitate healing.
While tinnitus can sometimes be hard to treat, treatment courses usually range 1 to 2 times per week for a couple of months to notice substantial and longer-lasting results. If there are triggers to tinnitus, like stress, maintenance may be needed to keep the results.
