Tinnitus & Hearing Loss

Tinnitus and gradual hearing loss often occur together, creating a frustrating cycle of ringing, buzzing, and diminished sound clarity. While age-related changes, noise exposure, and circulatory issues are common contributors, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views these symptoms as signs of deeper imbalance—often involving the Kidney and Liver meridians, which are believed to “open to the ears.” Acupuncture addresses both the underlying energy disruption and the local ear function to provide natural relief.

Improving Circulation and Nerve Function

Fine, sterile needles are placed at precise points on the body and around the ear to stimulate blood flow to the auditory nerve and inner ear structures. Enhanced microcirculation can help nourish delicate tissues, reduce inflammation, and support nerve signaling—factors that may slow or even partially reverse age-related hearing decline.

Calming the Nervous System

Chronic tinnitus can heighten stress, which in turn amplifies the perception of ringing. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting deep relaxation and lowering cortisol levels. Many patients notice not only a decrease in ear noise but also better sleep and a calmer mind.

Tailored Treatment Plans

Sessions are customized after a full evaluation of lifestyle, diet, and overall health. Points such as SJ17 (Yifeng), GB2 (Tinghui), KD3, and LV3 may be combined with scalp or auricular acupuncture for maximum benefit. Treatments are generally painless and last 30–45 minutes, with weekly visits recommended initially.

Integrative Support

For best results, acupuncture can be paired with gentle dietary adjustments, stress-management techniques, and, when appropriate, herbal formulas that strengthen Kidney energy and support circulation. This whole-body approach not only targets ear symptoms but also enhances vitality and resilience.

Many patients also report improved mental clarity and mood, finding daily life more enjoyable as ear health steadily strengthens.

Tinnitus and hearing loss can be a serious problem.  Zen Tuan of Healing with Zen gives a case study from her personal files, and explains how treatment with traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and herbs cleared the ringing in a patient’s ears that had plagued him for over a decade.

Yelp Review #31– I have chronic tinnitus and was looking for some relief. I’ve seen all the ear specialists, ENT’s at The House Ear Institute. My ENT finally recommended Acupuncture. I was skeptical at first, but Zen is amazing. After several visits my tinnitus was reduced dramatically. In addition, she addressed some other issues I was having simultaneously! Zen takes a loving and caring approach to bridge the gap between east/west medicines. She has been very helpful in reducing my problem and in some cases, healing completely my aliment. I highly recommend Zen! – Rob. L. – 10/24/2017 –

Yelp Review #28–  In January I began to notice a ringing in my ears.  I first consulted with my GP who basically told me, it’s what happens when you get older, you probably went to too many concerts and you just have to live with it.  Completely unsatisfied, I seeked out an alternative and found myself at Healing with Zen.  From the beginning, Katherine, my acupuncturist, was completely empathetic.  She took the time to help me understand how acupuncture works not just to alleviate my issue but to really help my entire system come back into balance.  There were benefits to my treatment that I didn’t expect.  (Better sleep, body temp regulation).  But most importantly Katherine (and Zen) were able to significantly reduce the ringing.  I would highly recommend Healing with Zen to anyone looking for an alternative to a strictly western diagnosis. – Michael B. – 5/2/2017
